The paranasal sinuses are a group of air-filled spaces located within the bones of the face and skull. These sinuses are connected to the nasal cavity and serve to moisten and filter the air that is breathed in. Diseases of the paranasal sinuses can include:
Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses, which can be caused by infection or allergic reactions. Symptoms may include facial pressure or pain, congestion, and difficulty breathing through the nose.
Fungal infections: Fungal infections of the sinuses can cause symptoms similar to bacterial sinusitis, including facial pain, congestion, and difficulty breathing through the nose.
Nasal polyposis: A condition in which polyps form in the nasal cavity and may extend into the sinuses.
Nasal tumors: Tumors can develop in the nasal cavity and sinuses, either benign or malignant. These can cause symptoms such as congestion, difficulty breathing, and facial pain.
Other sinus diseases include:
Allergic rhinitis
Mucoceles
Orbital cellulitis
Wegener's granulomatosis
Churg-Strauss syndrome
Sarcoidosis
Cystic fibrosis
Treatment for diseases of the paranasal sinuses may include medications, such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs, steroid nasal sprays.
Surgical options include Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS).
